Knew there was a better way but haven’t quite found it yet? This article may shed some light on things you didn’t know, or reinforce things you did know but haven’t put into practice yet. Without further ado, let’s get going!

There are just a few habit changes you can embrace over the course of your life to get your metabolism moving in a better direction immediately. You may have heard stories about people who have lost dozens of pounds simply switching to diet soda (although water is MUCH better for you!) and doing relatively easy physical things such as walking for just a few minutes each and every day. These are small habit changes that can and will contribute a huge difference to your health by increasing your metabolism over a period of time. You will have the benefit of reaching your weight loss goal quicker and easier by increasing your metabolic rate and therefore burning more calories.

1) First Habit for a Healthier Body: Move More and More Often

Sedentary people burn about one-third less calories per day than active people, and the more active you are, the better you off you will be. The benefits of physical activity cannot be understated – the differences you will see in yourself will be breathtaking. By simply taking every opportunity to move can make quite a dramatic difference to the amount of calories you burn in one day. Small movements will add up over time to lots of calories. The trick that makes this work is to keep doing something active at times throughout your day. Write the word ‘move’ on post-its and put them up in various places around your home and work areas. You’ll notice them when you’re just sitting still and they will serve to motivate you. At that point, use every possible opportunity to move around. Here are some fantastic ideas that will help you when you want to burn those extra calories:

  • Tap your feet on the floor
  • Swing your legs back and forth
  • Stand up and stretch several times – do a few deep knee bends or stretch in different ways
  • Move your head from side to side to some music
  • Change position often
  • Wriggle and fidget – even the smallest muscle movements help!
  • Pace up and down the hallway or around a room or office
  • Use the restroom upstairs instead of the one on the same floor, and take the stairs, not the elevator
  • Park in the furthest corner of the parking lot just because
  • Stand up when you’re on the phone and step from side to side or even do quiet chores like dusting or sweeping
  • Clench and release your muscles – this is great while you are in the car. Just be careful you don’t get a charley horse!

2) Eat Just a Little and Then Eat More Often

There is a ton of evidence that suggests eating small meals every 2-4 hours will help keep your metabolism burning faster than larger, less frequent meals. When you eat small amounts of food more often, your body is constantly working to digest and absorb food. This requires energy than when you eat a large meal and digest it over the next hour or so.

3) Eat More Fat, Less Sugar

If you want feel good and keep the fat off you actually need to first put fat in. Fat not only tastes great, but our bodies also need it to work much more efficiently. By consuming multiple servings of ‘healthy’ fats every day you will raise the calorie burning potential of your body. Try using fats everyday like Flaxseed oil, hempseed oil (available in our store!), olive oil, avocados, salmon, albacore tuna, nuts and seeds into your diet daily. 4) Drink LOTS OF Cold Water

Evidence shows that your body could burn more calories by increasing the temperature of cold water to the temperature of your body then when you drink hot beverages. Overall being well hydrated will help your body’s metabolic processes burn quicker. Staying hydrated is extremely important to your body – you will prevent dehydration which can cause all kinds of symptoms such as headaches and body aches and pains. Be hydrated and go drink some water 🙂

5) Exercise With Weights

Training with dead weights helps boost your metabolism in several different ways. By lifting weights you will increase your muscle tissue and body mass. Muscle tissue is metabolically active, so it requires calories even when at rest. Therefore it actually helps to increase fat-burning enzymes in your body. Besides that, muscle mass is heavier than fat mass – converting fat to muscle is a great way to look lean!

6) Spice It Up

Eating hot spices could very well help to speed up your body’s metabolism. Just half a teaspoon of cinnamon every day can help boost metabolism and keep your blood sugar levels where they should be. Can’t stomach having any cinnamon in your coffee cup in the morning? Spice it up with cayenne, crushed red pepper or wasabi.

7) Eat More Protein

Protein is fantastic for your body because it requires a more complex chemical breakdown by your body. This is so it can be digested properly and used as fuel. For example, did you know that 100 calories of protein may take up to 30 calories to process? Pretty wild phenomenon, right? Protein also takes much longer to digest in your stomach and helps to stabilize blood sugar for longer periods of time. This can help you resist overeating later in the day or at night, when food just sits in your body and could more likely turn to fat. Consume a portion of protein at every meal and as part of your snacks, You will see a great increase in the total number of calories that you burn every day. Over time, the difference will be amazing!
